Police arrested a Massachusetts teen for stealing part of a Holocaust memorial sculpture from a cemetery in Milton, MA. The unnamed suspect is awaiting a hearing on larceny and vandalism charges.
The 19-year-old arrested man—who remains unnamed because he was a minor when the theft occurred in September 2016—allegedly stole the sculpture to give it to a friend as a gift. The suspect has cooperated with police, who in a statement have determined that the theft was not driven by “hate, bias, or anti-Semitic sentiment.”
The stolen sculpture, created and donated by Waltham resident Fred Manasse, is called “Myriam’s Memorial”, named after his sister, who died in a Nazi concentration camp as a child.
Police have requested that Quincy District Court charge the suspect with larceny over $250 and destroying or defacing a grave or memorial to the dead.
