In 2015, Americans were more likely to die from heroin abuse than they were from a gunshot wound. According to data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control, this marked the first time in 16 years that heroin abuse took more lives than guns.
America’s Latest Epidemic
Heroin and synthetic opioid use accounted for more than 33,000 American deaths in 2015, the highest number ever recorded. Even if you separate the number of heroin-related deaths from those involving synthetic opioids, the former still claimed more lives than guns (12,989 to 12,979, respectively). This year, over 1,000 residents of Massachusetts have already lost their lives due to opioid abuse.
We Simply Must Do Better
Weaning addicts from their drug(s) of choice is a daunting task. If it weren’t, we probably wouldn’t find ourselves in the midst of yet another health crisis. While those of us in the legal industry are hardly experts in the fields of medicine and rehabilitation, we each have a role to play in encouraging smart and healthy decision-making. Thomas Whitney Attorney at Law cares deeply about Bay State residents, and our office is committed to helping each and every client overcome the legal challenges associated with drug use.
